Report 06-01-05
I believe summer is here to stay for awhile. We have had lots of sunshine
and some awesome catches. Rain seems to be non-existent. Go figure???
Our water temps are holding around the 78-83 degree mark. Wadefishing over
hard sand/grass bottoms have been producing our better quality of trout up
to 29" very early in the mornings and very late in the evenings while
using live croaker or soft plastics. Topwaters have also been very
productive with the abundance of baitfish LEAPING out of the water both
early and late in the day in my fishing area.
Trout are holding on the
deeper shell in all of our local bays. I'm a wadefisherman, but I'm not
complaining about how good it has been lately while fishing from the boat
instead of wading. There have been many 30 to 40 fish days by 11:00 am for
me. In doing this, I have been catching these fish in 5 to 7 feet of
water. Baitfish flipping out of the the water over these middle bay reefs
have been a plus in boxing fish.
In the past couple of days the wind has been our friend in helping us
catch fish if it's not blowing too hard. Once the water gets slick,
catching gets a little tough. Normally you don't see these kind of
conditions in May.
The wind has been lying down
around the 10 O'clock hour in the mornings. On the other hand, some days
the wind has been BLOWING A GAIL. On these days, I prefer to wadefish.
Boat fishing gets really tuff when the wind is blowing hard. Everyone out
on the water is huddled against the leeward side, and fishing grounds are
limited. The water gets really dirty when the wind is sustained around 20
mph and gusting to around 50 mph. The catching takes a real downturn too,
except for the really good trout in the 24" plus range while wadefishing.
You don't catch as many fish, but the ones you do catch are really stout
fish.
In the last couple of years we
have had lots of freshwater runoff and our bays are showing it. Copano Bay
has very little grass, while others have lots of "string grass". Some of
the bays that have lots of string grass are St.Charles, Carlos, Dunham,
and
the northern parts of Aransas Bay shorelines. Normally when I am fishing
for redfish, I hug tight to the shorelines. But this year we
Can't do that with all of this string grass. The fish are there, you just
can't hardly keep a bait free of the grass to catch them. I have seen this
string grass in many places that I don't normally see it and it has hurt
the "catching" all around for the last couple of months as for as the
redfishing goes in these areas.
I'm looking for this pattern to hold throughout the summer, except for the
wind which should lay quite a bit by the middle of June, here in the
Rockport area.
I still have plenty of days open to fish starting in July. If you would
like to book a trip, give me a ring. If you wait too long, someone else is
sure to get YOUR DAY of fishing time. Don't let it get away.
Until next time, Remember when the cards are down and the bet is called,
you have your Ace in the Hole.
